My disc was supposed to install Windows 7 without having to use a product key. And if the Dell product key hasn't actually been used, will it work on a non-dell machine? Dell Likely moved the sticker to a protected location because people were scraping off the sticker and or rubbing off the numbers when it was outside on the bottom of the laptop. The tech who replaced my hard drive said hat I should look at the tag on the bottom of my computer for the product key number. All machines have their original Dell service tags. My daughter's machine is now insisting that the Win7 installation is invalid. If you need windows 7, just buy it from a place like Newegg or Tigerdirect. If that's the way your original Windows 7 install was created, I don't think you have a Windows 7 product key in the Registry.

Now I keep getting a prompt that says that my copy of window is counterfeit. Other web pages say that Dell has changed their policy regarding recovery media and that apparently it costs £60 or so for recovery media when out of warranty. There is no point in trying to pull that key from a machine. It does state that it is the picture of the item but even so, it might be stolen though he states there are three of them. That's where things get a little tricky. I'm thinking Dell always uses the same key and then we're expected to change it but I don't recall ever seeing any documentation to that affect. Of course, it shouldn't be because you've told us your friend bought the computer recently.
Aren't they supposed to be using the key listed on the sticker? I would have thought the same, except that some of these were ordered nearly a year apart. However this didn't work for me this time. It might be that the Win 8 sticker computers don't actually get Win 7 keys even if you ordered Win 7. I am trying to properly document all of our Windows 7 licenses. You actually cannot use your Windows 7 key with Windows 10.
