Mark visits his elderly father Lenn, who suffers from dementia. Mark has a dad with dementia he visits twice as well as a boss who mildly chides him once. Expectations for anything else can only end in dulled disappointment. Yet this encounter also awkwardly occurs the morning after Elizabeth finally gets intimate again with Mark.
Elizabeth screams when she sees Jacob interacting with an unseen female presence. Aside from being pushed into the plot for thematic parallels, such inclusions are of arguable value in their limited incarnations. Mark realizes Jacob came back so his parents could forgive each other for the accident not being their fault. Janice Trejada comes to the door looking for previous tenants Peggy and Steve. Jacob has his parents hold a funeral for a bird that flies against a window. Elizabeth has a new husband, new children, and a new book about coping with loss.
