This is an outstanding little mini retrospective documentary that not only adds to the film, but makes this release a must have for collectors. The answer to that question takes us back to the Cold War. Disc authoring, duplication, and packaging on a retail scale is a far more complex and lengthy undertaking than one may be aware of. Its a giant leap forward though. In fact the first shot of the film, present on both the work print and the uncut release print, is a fade up on a view of 1966 El Paso from the overlook, followed by a pan right that takes in the full scene and stops on the city.

After driving around aimlessly, they stumble upon a long, mysterious road that brings them to a dilapidated shack or possibly an inn safeguarded by the strange, bearded caretaker Torgo John Reynolds, who fatally shot himself before the film was released , who is either a mythical half-man creature or really has a bad case of the shakes. Mystery Science Theater 3000 helped elevate the film to cult status, now living in infamy, never to be forgotten again Hopefully.

Throw in some of the most irritating and idiotic characters you'll ever see, a lot of disturbing sexual subtext, and the result is this pile of cinematic excrement. The film almost fell into obscurity until Mystery Science Theater 3000 featured the film in 1993 and it became the show's most popular episode. Anyway, things happen, arguments go in circles, the mom of the family yells for her husband so much you wonder how she ties her shoes in the morning without him, the husband makes so many wrong decisions you wonder if he'd be any help with the shoe-tying thing, and the female cultists get into an extended wrestling match, revealing that under their diaphanous Grecian robes they're wearing modern bras and underwear. Even with the various blemishes and grain inherent of the original shoot and the original negative, this is miles above the previous public domain releases out there which all seemed to stem from the same murky video master with colors now having some attractiveness to them. Long story short: I found myself in the public library on a long California afternoon, jolted by the familiar faces of Torgo and The Master flashing by in negative on a microfilm reader, flanked on each side by cute vintage camera ads. With this information, Michael asks Torgo to let him and his family stay the night, despite objections from both Torgo and Margaret. Not an incredibly startling revelation out of context, but it gives us a bit more of that distinctive musical score to enjoy, and it does confirm that the movie has no opening credits, no copyright information and not even a production company logo before the title card several minutes in.

Nearly lost, the original 16mm Ektachrome film elements have been finally unearthed and lovingly restored by Ben Solovey to create the definitive version of this accidental masterpiece. Inside the home, the family sees a disturbing painting of a dark, malevolent-looking man and a black dog with glowing eyes; the man it depicts is the Master. Once again, we owe Jackey Neyman Jones a debt for her invaluable, and tactful, help in introducing us to Diane. Evoking some mysterious power, The Master severs and horribly burns Torgo's left hand.
