Hi Bill, and welcome to the Club. The Left hand piston retracts in the counter clockwise direction, The Right hand piston in the clockwise direction. Easiest way to check is to remove both wheels and look where the driveshaft slides into the hub from the rear and check the condition of the ring wich looks like a ladder. Using the pump pliers rotate the piston head 180 deg, tighten the C-clamp, the piston should move in and fluid come out of the bleed pipe. When i went to remove the three legged puller i'd left on really really tight on fri night, it didn't feel as tight as i left it, so i tightened and tightened, then i got an almighty bang and off it came.
